Whistling Duck Identification

There are eight species of Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna) including the Black-bellied Whistling Duck, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Lesser Whistling Duck, Plumed Whistling Duck, Spotted Whistling Duck, Wandering Whistling Duck, West Indian Whistling Duck, and the White-faced Whistling Duck.

The Whistling Ducks have a long neck, long legs, and a hunched appearance. The male and female have a similar plumage and have black underwings. They also have distinctive whistling calls.

Black-bellied Whistling Duck: The Black-bellied Whistling Duck has a chestnut brown crown, nape, lower neck, and breast with a pale brown-grey face and upper neck, a white eye-ring, long red beak with blue tip, underparts and tail are black, wings are white with black primary feathers and brown wing coverts, and its long legs are pink. Both sexes are similar.

Fulvous Whistling Duck: The Fulvous Whistling Duck has a dark crown which extends to the nape, pale buff face and neck, the wings and mantle are dark brown with black edged feathers,the breast and belly are rich fulvous, the creamy-buff flank feathers form a border between the sides and the back, tail-coverts are creamy white and tail is black, the eyes are brown, and the beak, legs, and feet are blue-grey. Lesser Whistling Duck: The Lesser Whistling Duck has a dark grey-brown crown and forehead, dark eyes with pale yellow eye-ring, greyish-buff face and neck, long grey beak, chestnut lower breast, belly, and upper tail coverts, the back and wings are darkish grey, flanks have creamy streaks, and legs and feet are dark blue-grey. Plumed Whistling Duck: The Plumed Whistling Duck has a mainly brownish plumage with distinctive whitish plumes extending from the flanks, a brown back and tail, black-barred chestnut breast, pink beak with dark spots, yellow/orange eyes, white abdomen, vent and undertail, and legs and feet are pink. Both sexes are alike.

Spotted Whistling Duck: The Spotted Whistling Duck has a grey head with a dark crown and hind neck, dark-brown eyes, a pink-grey beak, a chestnut-brown breast with small white spots, brown flanks with large white spots, underparts are whitish. Upperparts and tail are dark-brown, wings are dark-brown, and legs are reddish-grey. Both sexes are alike.

Wandering Whistling Duck: The Wandering Whistling Duck has long legs and a long neck. It has a blackish crown and nape, pale brown face with whitish chin, black beak, light-brown speckled breast, rich red-brown underparts and flanks, white undertail, dark black and chestnut upperparts, and the legs and feet are dark. Both sexes are alike.

West Indian Whistling Duck: The West Indian Whistling Duck is larger and plumper than other Whistling Ducks. It has a dark brown head, with black crown, and nape, chin and throat are pale buff, lower neck is speckled with dark brown, upperparts and breast are dark brown, flanks are pale buff, underparts are heavily spotted, the beak is black, and feet and legs are greenish-black. Boths sexes look similar.

White-faced Whistling Duck: The White-faced Whistling Duck has a white face and crown, a black nape and upper neck with a white spot on the throat, a rich chestnut brown lower neck, breast, and back, barred black and white flanks, and the rump, tail underparts, and underside of wings are black. The beak is dark grey or black, and its legs are dark bluish-grey. Both sexes are similar.
